GOP LEADS IN PER DIEM SCAM

Just wondering if anyone else noticed that 16 of the top 20 collectors of per diem in the Assembly were Republicans. The party of small government has become the party of incumbent perquisites. Looking at the list of beneficiaries reminds me of the arrogant old warhorses who used to run the permanent Democrat majority in the State Assembly. Congratulations guys, you've really made it to the big time. It's probably a good thing that these reports don't receive the kind of investigative scrutiny that confronted Brian Burke, especially if the bar at the Inn on the Park doesn't count as an official meeting place. The per diem scam is another joint conspiracy by Democrats and Republicans to trick regular people into believing that legislative salaries are low. It's enlightening to see so many long-serving members of the Legislature grabbing all the taxpayer cash they can. The irrelevant Marlin Schneider is the ever-committed worst offender, but now Republicans are greedily reaching for his throne. The Party of Government rules on.

I'm usually with you on your posts, Ragnar, but not this time. If per diem are such crap, let's get rid of them, if not, let's not bash those who collect them.
If I ruled the world, I'd pay legislators a much higher salary (to attract a better quality of legislator) and get rid of these payments.
Johannes!

A very shallow observation. Of course the Republicans have more per diems...THEY RUN THE PLACE. Most of those 16 people are either on Finance (remember the budget?) or are chairs of major committees. Others (e.g. Sherman) live so far away that if they have a committee on Tuesday and Thursday they are not about to go home for one day. To my mind, the real issue is people like Berceau and Pocan who receive $6,000 in per diems for "expenses" at a job that is located less than 5 miles from their home.
Don't forget to add about 30% to the numbers to get the 'taxable income' equivalent.
Still and all, that's not a helluva lotta money, except for those Leggies who are sharing hotel rooms (thus saving the price of one...)
In those cases, the Leggies are having taxpayer-paid-sex.
Ahhh, perks!
